Hyundai Heavy wins tanker order from Russia

Hyundai Heavy Industries received an order for 4 eco-friendly LNG-fueled tankers from Russia's state-run shipping company Sovcomflot, korean media sources reported on March 20, 2017.


Hyundai Heavy announced that it signed a deal worth about $240 million with Sovcomflot to build four 114,000 ton LNG-propelled tankers.

Each tanker will feature a length of 250 meters, a width of 44 meters and a depth of 21 meters.

They will be mounted with the ice class 1A grade ice-resistant function.


They will be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and slated for delivery from the 3rd quarter of 2018 to the 1st quarter of 2019.

The tankers will be chartered by global oil major Royal Dutch Shell for transport of oil from Russia.


These ships are the world's 1st LNG-fuelled aframax tankers.

Hyundai officials said, that they will use the LNG fuel propulsion system, 1st among large vessels, thereby attracting hot attention as eco-friendly high-efficiency ships.


Compared to conventional ships, these vessels can reduce the emissions of sulphur oxides by more than 90 %, nitrogen oxides by more than 80 %, and carbon dioxide by more than 15 %
