Gazprom Armenia to expand Abovyan UGS facility’s capacity to 300 mln m3

17 December 2018 , 10:21Neftegaz.RU514

Yerevan, December 17 - Neftegeaz.RU. Armenia’s national natural gas distribution company Gazprom Armenia plans to increase the capacity of its Abovyan underground natural gas storage facility to 300 million m3, the chief engineer of Gazprom Armenia Ashot Hakobyan said, Armenian Arka reported.

According to him, Armenia’s national gas distribution operator will spend 173.55 million drams on the expansion of the facility’s capacity. He said the plan was still under development. He said Gazprom Armenia has developed a general scheme for the development and expansion of the Abovyan facility by 2030, but it needs to be approved by the government.

The Abovyan gas storage is one of the principal elements of Armenia’s gas transmission system ensuring the country’s energy security. It was constructed in 1962 on rock salt deposits at a depth of 800-1,000 meters. The gas storage regulates also the seasonal gas consumption by Armenia’s industrial sector and supplies gas to the country’s most important gas consumers.

Gazprom Armenia is the only company dealing with import and distribution of Russian gas coming to Armenia from Russia via Georgia. It was established in 1997.  More than 95% of Armenian households and industries are connected to the natural gas network, one of the highest indexes in the world.
