Nigeria's Oil Vandalised

07 April 2003 , 09:551878
One of the Nigeria?s main oil pipelines has been damaged by what appeared to be explosives. It occurred on Saturday.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said the pipeline was vandalised, just as its southern Warri refinery was about to restart production after having been closed for several days because of a disruption to oil supplies caused by local ethnic unrest.

Local ethnic Ijaw communities also threatened to blow up oil facilities if the military did not withdraw from the area.

Ethnic conflict in the area last month froze about 40% of Nigerian oil production, until ChevronTexaco and Royal Dutch/Shell announced on Friday that they had restarted some output.
