Poland To Rise Taxes On Gasoline
28 April 2003 , 09:221099
In order to fund new motor way projects, Marek Pol, the Polish Infrastructure Minister, plans to introduce a new tax on gasoline.
The tax of 4¢ per gallon is expected to bring in an extra $260 million a year.
The government needs the money to co-finance motorway projects after joining the European Union. Under EU rules, Poland has to pay at least a third of the investments.
Poland's motorway program provides for the construction of 3?000 km of multi-lane highway from which only 394 km has been built.
